The Importance of Exfoliating Before Using Self Tanners

Sunless tanners are a safe and convenient way to get an authentic looking tan without exposing the skin to harmful UV radiation from the sun or from sun beds. To get the best results from self tanners it is important to prep the skin beforehand, exfoliation being an important part of that.

Why to exfoliate before using sunless tanners

Exfoliation helps to slough off dead skin cells and other impurities from the surface of the skin. Using an exfoliator will leave the skin smooth and even. This way any tanning product you use will apply more evenly and uniformly, making your tan appear flawless and natural looking.  Not exfoliating properly will result in patchy, uneven application.

There are other reasons to use exfoliate skin before using getting a sunless tan – exfoliation makes the skin appear fresher and younger; plus it promotes cell renewal. Many exfoliating products contain active anti inflammatory and antioxidant ingredients to hydrate and nourish the skin. This helps to improve its condition so that the sunless tanners will last longer on the skin surface.

How to exfoliate before using self tanners

There are several options for exfoliation before using a self tanning product. Diatomaceous earth consists of grainy beads that help to physically exfoliate the skin, sloughing of dead skin cells and other impurities when you scrub your skin with it.
Using a formulation with chemical exfoliating ingredients such as salicylic acid, AHAs (alpha hydroxyl acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxyl acids) will also help smoothen the skin and prep it for tanning.

Then there are natural ingredients such as acai berry, passion flower, jojoba or other plant extracts that help to naturally nourish the skin preventing drying and flaking.

Using an exfoliating mitt can also help remove dead skin cells and smoothen the skin in preparation for suing a sunless tanner. Some experts recommend dry brushing the skin before using the exfoliating mitt in the shower.

Avoid sugar or salt based exfoliants because some of them tend to leave a residue on the skin, which makes it difficult for the tan to adhere to the skin. Then when you shower, use warm water and a mild cleanser that also leaves no coating or residue on the skin.

Always be sure to exfoliate using firm, circular and even strokes. Also make sure that you cover the entire skin surface so as not to get patchy or uneven results when using sunless tanners. Concentrate on the problem areas such as the knees, elbows and other areas that could have rougher skin.
